As the name suggests, these are signs that are self-supporting, relying on steel, wood or concrete columns to which signs are attached.  The larger ones, like you see in major shopping centres, displaying the names of several stores/companies that may occupy the premises, are commonly referred to as "pylon signs."  Freestanding signs are not limited to just those larger ones however.  Even a 4'x8' commercial real estate sign is considered a freestanding sign as far as City bylaws are concerned.
